Oldupai Gorge - Olkarien Gorge - Nasera Rock

Oldupai Gorge:
The Oldupai Gorge contains some of the earliest signs of mankind ever discovered. This ‘Cradle of Mankind’ has yielded abundant fossil material dating back at least two million years. It was here (1959) that Mary and Louis Leakey discovered the remains of Nutcracker Man. Nearby, in Laitoli, (1979) Mary Leakey discovered the footprints of hominids which are estimated to be over three million years old.

The excavation sites have been preserved for public viewing. And archeologists still continue to explore the gorge every year.

You can view Imprints of these footprints, and more in the Olduvai museum located within the Gorge. On leaving the museum, your driver guide will also show you the mysterious shifting sands.  
 

Nasera Rock:
Nasera rock is a huge granite monolith. It rises 80 metres above the ground. The Gol mountains make a beautiful backdrop, and you can watch wildebeest at play in the plains around the rock, while baboons clamber up the steep sides. Other wildlife include the resident Klipspringers and a wide variety of bird life.
 

Olkarien Gorge:
Olkarien Gorge is the nesting site of the Ruppel's griffon vulture. The Gorge itself is a stunning, narrow rocky cut at the eastern edge of the Gol Mountains.
